In a decisive move to choke off the financial lifelines of global insurgency and digital fraud, the United States Department of the Treasury has officially frozen the assets of eight Nigerian nationals. The sanctions, executed through the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), target individuals deeply entrenched in the operations of Boko Haram, the Islamic State (ISIL), and high-level cybercrime networks.
The Treasury’s “Specially Designated Nationals” list now includes these eight individuals, effectively locking them out of the U.S. financial system. Under Executive Order 13224, any property or interests belonging to these men within U.S. jurisdiction are now blocked, and American citizens are strictly prohibited from engaging in any transactions with them.
The Terror Network: Funding Insurgency from the Shadows
Leading the list are several high-profile figures linked to the decade-long insurgency in Northeast Nigeria. Notably, Salih Yusuf Adamu (35) was previously convicted in the UAE for orchestrating a Boko Haram cell in Dubai that attempted to funnel $782,000 back to Nigeria to fund terror operations.
Joining him are notorious commanders and ideologues of the Boko Haram and ISWAP factions:
- Abu Musab Al-Barnawi (Habib Yusuf) and Abu Abdullah ibn Umar Al-Barnawi: Both recognized as pivotal leaders in the splintered factions of the Lake Chad region.
- Khaled Al-Barnawi: A veteran insurgent known by several aliases, including Abu Hafsat.
- Abu Bakr ibn Muhammad ibn Ali Al-Mainuki: Specifically flagged for his deep-rooted ties to the Islamic State (ISIL).
- Ibrahim Ali Alhassan: Based in Abu Dhabi, Alhassan is identified as a critical link in the group’s international logistics and financing.
- Babestan Oluwole Ademulero: Sanctioned for extensive terrorism-related activities under multiple identities.
Digital Warfare: The Cybercrime Front
The U.S. also took aim at Nigeria’s evolving cyber threat landscape by sanctioning Nnamdi Orson Benson (38). Benson was listed under the stringent CYBER2 sanctions, a category reserved for individuals involved in “significant malicious cyber-enabled activities” that threaten national security and economic stability.
This multi-pronged crackdown signals an intensified collaboration between international intelligence agencies to dismantle the hybrid threats of physical terrorism and digital extortion emanating from West Africa.
