Abuja, Nigeria – The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a security alert, urging its citizens to steer clear of Nigerian military and government facilities in Abuja due to “increased global security concerns.” This advisory, released on Monday, June 23, prohibits US Embassy employees and their families from non-official travel to such locations in the Nigerian capital.
The directive comes in response to unspecified global developments that have necessitated heightened security measures and a reevaluation of movement around sensitive areas.
The US Embassy has advised American citizens residing in or visiting Nigeria to remain vigilant in public places, especially those frequented by Westerners, expatriates, and government officials.
In a statement, the US Mission encouraged its nationals to avoid large gatherings, maintain unpredictable routines, and familiarize themselves with emergency exits in buildings. The embassy also urged citizens to review their personal security plans and exercise increased caution during their stay in Nigeria.
The statement read in part, “Due to increased security concerns arising from current global developments, US Mission Nigeria informs US citizens that all US Embassy employees and their families are prohibited from non-official travel to a Nigerian military site or other government venue in Abuja at this time”.
Despite these new restrictions, the Consular Sections of the US Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos will remain open and operational.
