On Monday, academic activities came to a halt at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, as members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and Non-Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (NASU) joined the seven-day nationwide warning strike.
The unions cited unfair treatment and salary disparities by the federal government as reasons for the strike action. Members of the unions conducted marches around the university campus to ensure compliance with the strike among their members.
Bonny Ozonkwuaku, the Secretary of SSANU at the institution, stated to journalists that they were fully complying with the national directive to observe the seven-day warning strike.
He highlighted the closure of various university offices and units, emphasizing that they would remain shut until their demands were met.

Ozonkwuaku expressed dissatisfaction with the treatment of non-teaching staff by the Federal Government, noting the non-payment of 2022 arrears as a key grievance.
He stressed the economic challenges faced by members and called for government attention to their plight.
Furthermore, Ozonkwuaku emphasized the deteriorating state of the university system, directing attention to the need for urgent reforms.
He warned of further action should the government fail to address their demands after the warning strike.
The unions issued a final warning, threatening to escalate the strike by shutting down hostels and power supply in universities nationwide if their demands were not met by the end of Monday.
