Osun State University, UNIOSUN, has entered the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027 for the first time, emerging as Nigeria’s highest-ranked state-owned university and securing a joint eighth position nationally.
The university was placed in the 1,201–1,400 global band, alongside Babcock University and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
The 2027 ranking was published on September 30, 2026, and assessed 2,297 universities across 118 countries and territories.
ValidViewNetwork reports that UNIOSUN’s entry also comes as the number of Nigerian universities represented in the global ranking rises to 29, up from 24 in the 2026 edition.
Nigeria is the most represented country in sub-Saharan Africa in the 2027 ranking.
SEVEN STATE UNIVERSITIES MAKE THE NIGERIAN LISTUNI
OSUN’s achievement is particularly notable within the state-owned university system. Only seven state-owned universities were among the 29 Nigerian institutions included in the 2027 Times Higher Education ranking.
The other institutions represented the federal and private university sectors.
UNIOSUN consequently emerged as the highest-ranked state-owned university in Nigeria. The university’s official statement said the ranking represents an important milestone in its development and provides an external benchmark for its performance in teaching, research, international outlook and industry engagement.
1,201–1,400 GLOBAL BAND
Globally, UNIOSUN was placed in the 1,201–1,400 band. The ranking places it alongside Babcock University and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
The university’s national position was listed as joint eighth.
This means that UNIOSUN was not among the three Nigerian universities in the highest national band of 801–1,000, occupied by Covenant University, the University of Ibadan and the University of Lagos.
Those three institutions were jointly Nigeria’s highest-ranked universities in the 2027 edition.
UNIOSUN’S RESEARCH PERFORMANCE
UNIOSUN recorded a 25.6 score in Research Environment, its strongest performance among the reported ranking indicators.
That score was the second highest among the 29 ranked Nigerian universities, behind Covenant University, which scored 32.5 in the same category.
The university’s Research Environment score was also substantially above the national mean for the category, reported at 13.9. The result points to research conditions as one of the institution’s stronger areas in the latest ranking.
TEACHING SCORE ALSO STANDS OUT
UNIOSUN recorded a 23.6 score in Teaching. That placed the university fifth nationally in the indicator. Its teaching score was also above the Nigerian national mean of 20.6.
The university said the performance reflects its continuing emphasis on academic development and institutional quality. The ranking also assessed UNIOSUN on other dimensions, including research quality, industry engagement and international outlook.

The university recorded the following scores in the 2027 Times Higher Education assessment:
Research Environment: 25.6
Teaching: 23.6
Research Quality: 43.8
Industry: 17.6
International Outlook: 40.3
The scores form part of the broader methodology used by Times Higher Education to assess participating universities.
The ranking uses five broad pillars: Teaching, Research Environment, Research Quality, International Outlook and Industry.
The 2027 methodology contains 18 performance indicators, covering areas such as teaching reputation, research productivity and quality, citations, international collaboration, industry income and patents.
29 NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES RANKED
Nigeria’s representation increased from 24 universities in the 2026 edition to 29 in 2027.
Five institutions made their debut in the latest edition:
Osun State University
University of Maiduguri
Olabisi Onabanjo University
Kwara State University
Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike
The increase means Nigeria now has the largest representation among countries in sub-Saharan Africa in the ranking.
COVENANT, UI AND UNILAG LEAD NIGERIA
At the top of the Nigerian table, Covenant University, the University of Ibadan and the University of Lagos were jointly placed in the 801–1,000 global band.
They were followed by institutions in the 1,001–1,200 band, including Ahmadu Bello University, Bayero University, Landmark University and the University of Ilorin.
UNIOSUN’s 1,201–1,400 placement therefore puts it within the next national grouping and, importantly for the state university sector, ahead of the other state-owned institutions represented in the ranking.
UNIOSUN’S PREVIOUS RANKING PERFORMANCE
The Times Higher Education debut is not UNIOSUN’s first recent appearance in an international university ranking.
In July 2026, the university said it ranked 19th among 312 Nigerian universities in the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities.
It also placed third among Nigeria’s 68 state-owned universities and 137th among 2,390 universities across Africa in that ranking.
The latest THE result therefore adds another external ranking benchmark to the university’s recent performance record.
VICE-CHANCELLOR REACTS
The Vice-Chancellor of UNIOSUN, Prof. Odunayo Clement Adebooye, welcomed the development.
According to the university, Adebooye commended the Osun State Government and other stakeholders for their support and commitment to the institution’s development.
He said the university would build on the achievement and continue pursuing initiatives aimed at strengthening its academic and research profile and improving its global recognition.
WHAT THE RANKING MEANS FOR UNIOSUN
The university’s entry into the Times Higher Education ranking gives it an additional external benchmark against which its academic and institutional performance can be measured.
Its relatively strong scores in Research Environment and Teaching stand out in the Nigerian context, while the ranking also identifies areas where further improvement is possible, particularly in research quality and other measures of global competitiveness.
The ranking itself does not mean that UNIOSUN is superior in every academic discipline to every other Nigerian university.
Rather, it reflects performance across the specific indicators and methodology used by Times Higher Education.
ValidViewNetwork reports that UNIOSUN’s achievement is therefore significant not merely because of its joint eighth national position, but because the university has entered one of the internationally recognised global ranking systems for the first time and emerged as Nigeria’s highest-ranked state-owned institution in the 2027 edition.
UNIOSUN’s debut offers another indication of the growing competition among Nigerian universities for research visibility, teaching quality, international collaboration and global recognition.
The next challenge will be to sustain and improve the indicators that produced the current result, particularly research quality, while converting ranking performance into stronger teaching, research output, innovation and opportunities for students.
For a relatively young state-owned university, continued improvement across those areas will matter more over time than a single ranking position.
