UNGA Transit Immunity: Tinubu, Family Face No US Restrictions, Says Ibrahim

​Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, has asserted that President Bola Tinubu and his family maintain completely unimpeded transit privileges and face no threat of arrest during their presence in the United States for the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

​Addressing the public from New York, Ibrahim—who also chairs the UN Committee on Budget and Administration—clarified that the Nigerian Mission has received zero formal notifications from United States authorities regarding any legal restrictions or movement limitations targeting the Nigerian leader.

​The envoy anchored his position on Section 11 of the 1947 UN-U.S. Agreement. Under this diplomatic framework, federal, state, and local law enforcement entities across the United States are legally bound to refrain from imposing any travel impediments on member state representatives and their accompanying family members moving to and from the UN headquarters district.

​Commenting on high-level global representation, Ibrahim noted that delegation rosters frequently shift according to state priorities, pointing out that over 60 percent of current speaking slots feature vice presidents and foreign ministers rather than heads of state. He additionally referenced historical precedents, recalling that past travel constraints placed on a former Nigerian leader during a previous UN assembly were linked to unproven allegations, emphasizing that mere accusations carry no weight under due process until established beyond reasonable doubt.

​Dismissing online campaigns and political commentary aimed at generating controversy ahead of the summit, the ambassador maintained that formal investigative procedures within the United States operate under strict protocols and that digital rhetoric holds no legal bearing. He further encouraged Nigerians at home and abroad to rally behind the federal administration’s ongoing economic reforms.
