Osborn Nweze Umahi, the 28-year-old son of Minister of Works and former Ebonyi State Governor David Umahi, was formally sworn in on Tuesday, 1 September 2026, as Chairman of Ohaozara Local Government Area, beginning his tenure at the head of one of Ebonyi State’s local councils barely ten days after winning the seat at the polls.

Umahi faces no legal dispute over his emergence; he contested and won the Ohaozara chairmanship election held on 22 August 2026 on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and his swearing-in followed the standard process for newly elected local government officials in the state.

A ceremony with a familiar face in the crowd

Findings by ValidViewNetwork show the oath of office was personally administered by Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru, before a gathering of political leaders, government officials, party faithful and other dignitaries.

Among them was the chairman’s own father, Senator David Umahi, who attended as a special guest, watching his son take on an office in the same state he once governed from 2015 to 2023 before his elevation to the federal cabinet as Minister of Works.

Photographs from the ceremony captured the younger Umahi interacting with dignitaries shortly after taking the oath.

Who the new chairman is

Checks by ValidViewNetwork show Osborn Umahi, born on 14 March 1998, completed his primary and secondary education in Nigeria before relocating to London at age 15 for further studies.

He has since built a business portfolio spanning energy, construction and hospitality, holding roles with Tyneside Oil & Gas and the Osborn Group, alongside experience in asset management and corporate finance through his involvement with Forte GCC Innovative Solutions.

A pledge that shaped his campaign

During his campaign and again shortly after his election victory, Umahi pledged to forgo his statutory salary and allowances throughout his tenure, framing the decision as proof that his motivation for seeking office was service rather than personal enrichment.

He identified infrastructure development, youth empowerment, job creation and improved service delivery as the priorities of his administration, telling supporters after his election that,

“After today, the chairman becomes the chairman of everybody in the local government, not just one political party.”

What Ohaozara residents will be watching for

With the ceremony now behind him, attention turns to whether Umahi’s campaign promises, particularly his no-salary pledge and his stated focus on grassroots development, translate into visible change across Ohaozara’s communities.

Observers note his emergence adds to a growing conversation in Nigerian politics about the presence of politically connected young Nigerians in elective office, at a time when questions about generational access to power remain far from settled.

Our conclusion

Stories like this one deserve a final word, not just a headline. It is worth noting, plainly, that a 28-year-old with the right surname has walked into a local government chairmanship with the kind of ease that eludes millions of equally ambitious young Nigerians without one.

That contrast is not Osborn Umahi’s fault, and nothing here suggests wrongdoing on his part.

But it is a reminder to Nigeria’s youth, particularly those who allow themselves to be used as political thugs and enforcers during election seasons, chasing crumbs on behalf of politicians who will never hand them a ballot paper, let alone a chairmanship seat: no politician sends his own child out to snatch ballot boxes or clash with rival camps in the sun.

They save the offices, and the safety, for their own.

Youths across Nigeria would do well to ask why they are handed placards and machetes when other young Nigerians, sometimes their own age mates, are handed oaths of office instead.
