A UK-based Nigerian doctor, Richard Akinrolabu, has been sentenced to three years in prison at Woolwich Crown Court for defrauding the National Health Service (NHS) of over £268,000 by working shifts while on sick leave. The 61-year-old from Orpington, Kent, admitted to four counts of fraud by false representation, having worked on-call and night shifts despite officially being on medical leave. This significant breach of trust and abuse of his professional position was uncovered following an investigation by the NHS Counter Fraud Authority, leading to his conviction and custodial sentence.
Richard Akinrolabu, a former NHS resident doctor, was found guilty of working multiple shifts during his sick leave period, thus receiving payments for work he was not supposed to perform according to his medical status. The fraud amounted to more than £268,000, reflecting a prolonged period of deception against the NHS, which relies heavily on trust and integrity in healthcare roles. The court sentenced him to three years imprisonment, emphasizing the seriousness of defrauding public health services and the betrayal of a position of responsibility.
This case highlights the vigilance of the NHS Counter Fraud Authority in detecting and prosecuting fraudulent activities that jeopardize public resources. Fraud within the NHS not only undermines financial integrity but also impacts patient care by diverting funds meant for healthcare services. The sentence serves as a clear warning to healthcare professionals and others working in the NHS that fraudulent conduct will be met with stringent legal consequences.
