The UK government, under Prime Minister Keir Starmer, announced on Friday a landmark initiative to introduce a free digital identification scheme for all UK nationals and legal residents. This sweeping move aims to curb illegal migration by making it mandatory for individuals to use the digital ID as proof of their right to work, thereby blocking illegal migrants from finding employment and reducing one of the primary “pull factors” driving unlawful entry into the country.
The new digital ID will be stored securely on individuals’ smartphones, eliminating the need to carry physical ID cards or present them in daily situations. While it will not be compulsory to produce this digital ID in most cases, it will be mandatory for right-to-work verification in employment. The government emphasizes that this new system will streamline access to a variety of public services, including driving licence applications, childcare support, welfare benefits, and tax records.
This digital ID initiative marks a significant shift in UK policy, as the country has historically resisted the introduction of identity cards. However, rising political pressure and public polling indicate growing support for measures that tighten border controls and reduce illegal work. Starmer described the scheme as an “enormous opportunity” for the UK to modernize its identity verification systems while simultaneously securing borders and creating a fairer society.
The government view this step as part of a broader strategy to crack down on illegal working, highlighting that arrests for illegal employment have increased by 50% under the current regime. The scheme also supports legislative plans aimed at stopping illegal work in the gig economy. The rollout of the digital ID will be phased, with the aim of mandatory right-to-work checks via this digital system by the end of the current parliamentary term.
Despite some criticism from opposition parties and concerns over privacy and civil liberties, the government maintains that the digital ID will enhance security without the burdens of traditional physical ID cards. The initiative also builds on recent successes such as the UK-France returns deal for the deportation of illegal migrants.
This announcement comes ahead of the Labour Party’s annual conference, as immigration remains one of the most pressing issues for voters and a focal point of public debate in Britain.
In summary, the UK’s new digital ID scheme promises to change how citizens and residents prove their identity and legal employment status, aiming to crack down on illegal migration and improve access to vital government services in a digital age .
