Uganda Snubs Prince Harry’s Invictus Games Over King Charles Loyalties

​Uganda has dramatically reversed its historic sports diplomacy commitment, pulling out of the upcoming Invictus Games just two months after celebrating its admission as the tournament’s 26th participating nation.

​The abrupt withdrawal was announced by Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba. The high-ranking military official and son of President Yoweri Museveni declared that the East African nation would immediately sever ties with the tournament to avoid any perception of disrespect toward King Charles III.

​“In order not to be construed as being opposed to His Majesty King Charles III of the United Kingdom, whom we deeply revere, Uganda hereby withdraws from the Invictus Games,” General Kainerugaba wrote in a statement posted on social media. He further emphasized that the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) would refrain from engaging in any international programming lacking explicit royal endorsement.

​The sudden about-face follows a delicate climate surrounding the British royal household. Buckingham Palace recently issued a pointed clarification regarding the status of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, reaffirming that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex remain non-working members of the royal family. Reports subsequent to the announcement highlighted internal divisions within Uganda’s defense circles regarding participation in initiatives linked to the Sussexes, prompting Kainerugaba’s swift intervention to preempt diplomatic friction.

​Organizers of the international sporting event—founded by Prince Harry in 2014 to champion the rehabilitation of wounded, injured, and sick service members—expressed surprise at the development. Representatives for the Invictus Games Foundation noted that they had received no formal diplomatic communication regarding the withdrawal and were actively seeking clarification through local channels.

​The cancellation abruptly halts what was hailed in July as a groundbreaking partnership intended to bolster veteran rehabilitation programs in East Africa, casting fresh shadows over the complex intersection of international military alliances and the ongoing estrangement within the British monarchy.
