At least 63 people have died and multiple others sustained injuries following a devastating road accident on the Kampala-Gulu highway in western Uganda early Wednesday morning. The tragic crash occurred shortly after midnight at Kitaleba Village in the Kiryandongo district.
According to a police statement, the collision involved two passenger buses traveling in opposite directions alongside a Toyota Surf and a Tata lorry. Preliminary investigations reveal that one of the Isuzu buses attempting to overtake a lorry collided head-on with the other bus, which was also trying to pass another vehicle simultaneously.
In an effort to avoid the collision, one driver swerved off course, triggering a chain reaction that caused at least four other vehicles to lose control and overturn multiple times. The crash scene resulted in severe damage to all involved vehicles.
The Ugandan Police confirmed that all occupants from the involved vehicles were among the fatalities, with 63 people confirmed dead. Several survivors, injured in the pile-up, were quickly transported to Kiryandongo Hospital and other nearby medical facilities for urgent medical attention. However, details on the exact number of injured and their conditions remain limited.

Officials have launched an inquiry into the incident to determine the precise circumstances leading to the catastrophic crash. Police authorities are urging motorists nationwide to exercise extreme caution on the roads, especially by avoiding risky overtaking maneuvers—a leading cause of accidents in the country.
Fatal road collisions remain a common and grave concern in Uganda, where narrow highways and speeding are frequent contributing factors. This latest tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for heightened road safety awareness and adherence to traffic regulations.
Further updates on the investigation and victim identities are awaited as emergency services continue their response efforts to this tragic road accident.
