
Udo Kier, the legendary German actor and cult icon whose career spanned over five decades and more than 200 films, died on Sunday at the age of 81. Known for his mesmerizing presence and piercing blue eyes, Kier left an indelible mark on the horror genre and was renowned for his avant-garde work with filmmakers such as Andy Warhol and Lars von Trier, as well as collaborations with pop icon Madonna.

Born in Cologne, Germany, in 1944 during World War II, Kier was discovered as an actor in London in the 1960s and quickly rose to fame with his breakout role in 1970’s “Mark of the Devil.” He became a cult favorite starring in Warhol’s shocking 1970s films “Flesh for Frankenstein” and “Blood for Dracula.” Kier also earned mainstream recognition in the 1990s with supporting roles in hit Hollywood movies such as “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective,” “Armageddon,” and the vampire thriller “Blade.”

His artistic range extended through collaborations with Denmark’s Lars von Trier, featuring in acclaimed films like “Breaking the Waves,” “Dancer in the Dark,” and “Melancholia,” the latter winning the European Film Award for Best Film. Kier also appeared in Madonna’s music videos for the 1992 album “Erotica,” making him a distinct figure in both film and music pop culture. His last film appearances included the 2025 movie “The Secret Agent,” Brazil’s official submission for the upcoming Academy Awards.

Kier’s partner Delbert McBride confirmed his passing in a California hospital, although no cause of death has been made public. Udo Kier’s legacy as a cult icon and versatile character actor is firmly etched in international cinema history.
