ABUJA — Barely months into their joint presidential bid, Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate Peter Obi and his running mate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, are showing sharply divergent views on two of the most consequential policy questions facing the next administration: fuel subsidy and state police.

ValidViewNetwork can confirm that the gap surfaced publicly this week, with Obi maintaining at the Nigerian Bar Association conference in Port Harcourt that subsidy removal should stand, mismanagement of savings notwithstanding, while Kwankwaso told a television interviewer that an Obi-led government would bring subsidy back “in our own way.”

Where the two men split

According to reports gotten by ValidViewNetwork, Obi has consistently argued that removing the subsidy was the right call, faulting only how the freed-up resources were managed rather than the policy itself.

Kwankwaso, by contrast, floated domestically built refineries as a route back toward affordable pump prices, arguing government intervention remains justified until Nigerians can buy fuel at “a reasonable price.”

The two also diverge on state police: Obi has publicly backed the recently passed State Police Bill, even while criticising the National Assembly’s rushed process, whereas Kwankwaso rejects state police outright, blaming the very push for it on the federal police’s own failures.

A ticket under strain from within, too

Findings show the policy gap is not the NDC’s only headache. A parallel crisis has erupted between the party’s national leadership and grassroots volunteers under the Obi-Kwankwaso (OK) Movement, after the movement unveiled its own 59-member Presidential Campaign Council without party approval, a move NDC National Chairman Cleopas Moses swiftly disowned.

National Leader Seriake Dickson has since called the movement’s actions “nonsensical,” while OK Movement Director-General John Ughulu has declared the group an independent organisation that will not be absorbed into NDC’s structures.

Can the ticket hold?

ValidViewNetwork gathered that political analysts are split on what this means for 2027. Some argue that the differences reflect healthy diversity within a broad coalition, while others warn that unresolved friction over both policy direction and campaign structure could confuse grassroots mobilisation at the ward level, where clarity of message and command matters most.

With the NDC now leaving key campaign council nominations to Obi and Kwankwaso themselves, how the duo resolves both disputes may determine whether “one ticket, two visions” becomes a manageable nuance or a fatal flaw. ValidViewNetwork reports.
