Leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Northern Nigeria have endorsed former Minister of Special Duties, Barrister Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, as the consensus candidate for the position of National Chairman. This decision was announced by Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, following a meeting of Northern PDP leaders in Abuja on Wednesday night, ahead of the party’s national convention scheduled for November in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The consensus emerged after intense contestation among prominent aspirants from the North-West zone, including former Kaduna State Governor Ahmed Makarfi and former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido. The Northern PDP leaders have zoned the chairmanship to the North-West region, with Turaki reportedly enjoying broad support from key party stakeholders such as governors and members from the zone and beyond. While Turaki was named the consensus candidate, Governor Fintiri noted that any aspirant dissatisfied with this consensus remains free to contest at the convention.

The PDP National Convention is set for mid-November and will include the finalization of candidates for various key party positions, reflecting the party’s efforts to unify ahead of crucial upcoming elections. Turaki’s emergence is viewed by political analysts as a potential turning point for the PDP’s renewal and leadership credibility. His leadership qualities of unity, justice, and reform have been highlighted as essential to repositioning the party for future success.
