Nigerian businessman and former Skye Bank chairman, Dr. Tunde Ayeni, has publicly dismissed out-of-court settlement overtures made by his former mistress, Adaobi Alagwu, regarding their ongoing legal dispute. In a statement personally signed by Ayeni, he confirmed that Alagwu had initiated “back-door” efforts to resolve the matter privately but stressed his resolute refusal to accept any private offer, citing the significant public damage to his reputation and family as his primary concern.
The dispute centers on allegations of paternity fraud, where Ayeni denies fathering a child claimed by Alagwu. The matter was brought before a customary court, which ruled that no valid customary marriage ever existed between the parties, and consequently declared that the court lacked jurisdiction to entertain further reliefs sought by Ayeni. Despite these rulings, the dispute has drawn large public and media attention, intensifying the reputational harm to Ayeni and distress within his family.
Ayeni emphasized that his primary objective is to restore his reputation, which he says has been severely tarnished by the allegations and the surrounding controversy. He stated that accepting a private settlement would diminish the seriousness of the accusations and the damage suffered. Furthermore, Ayeni has cautioned friends and associates to steer clear of the issue, declaring that he no longer welcomes any mention of Alagwu or interaction regarding the dispute outside the legal proceedings.
The legal case continues before a competent court, with Ayeni indicating preparedness to testify in open court while expressing expectations that Alagwu will also appear. The ongoing conflict underscores Ayeni’s determination to seek full legal vindication in a public forum rather than resolve the matter discreetly.
This controversy has captured widespread public interest, partly due to Ayeni’s status as a high-profile banker and businessman. He has openly expressed regret over his past involvement with Alagwu, warning others about the potentially damaging consequences of such personal entanglements.
