Thomas Tuchel’s preparations for his side’s return to the UEFA Nations League have been thrown into chaos after five key players pulled out of the England squad due to injury.
Cole Palmer, Declan Rice, Kobbie Mainoo, Marcus Rashford, and Tino Livramento have all withdrawn from the setup ahead of Saturday’s marquee clash against world champions Spain at Wembley.
The mass pullouts deal a heavy blow to the German manager, who had just handed Palmer a high-profile international recall following the midfielder’s omission from the World Cup squad. Palmer reported a minor muscle issue following Chelsea’s weekend fixture, forcing him to postpone his return to the international fold.
Meanwhile, Manchester United duo Mainoo and Rashford both picked up issues during their side’s draw with Fulham, and Arsenal anchor Declan Rice dropped out following heavy recent workloads. Newcastle defender Tino Livramento rounds out the absentees after suffering a setback following his long-awaited return from an injury layoff.
In response to the mounting crisis, Tuchel has turned to Everton midfielder James Garner and Nottingham Forest playmaker Morgan Gibbs-White as late reinforcements. Both players are set to report to St George’s Park as the Three Lions look to regroup before hosting Spain, followed by fixtures against Czechia and Croatia.
