President Donald Trump announced U.S. intentions to administer Venezuela following military strikes that captured Nicolas Maduro on January 3, 2026, prompting sharp rebukes from Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and other leaders. They accused the administration of misleading Congress and risking endless war without authorization.
Trump’s Venezuela Announcement
Trump stated during a January 3 press conference that the U.S. would “run the country until such time as we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition,” hinting at potential troop deployments and U.S. oil companies investing billions to repair infrastructure. The strikes targeted Caracas and other areas, leading to Maduro’s removal along with his wife and son, who face U.S. drug trafficking charges. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reportedly spoke with Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodríguez, who allegedly agreed to cooperate.

Democratic Leaders’ Criticism
Schumer called the actions “reckless,” noting Maduro’s illegitimacy but stressing the lack of congressional approval and a post-action plan, warning of humanitarian disaster or swapping dictators. In a joint statement, Schumer, Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE), Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA), Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL), Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI), Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA), Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), and Sen. Brian Schatz (D-HI) condemned plans to occupy Venezuela, demanding clarity on risks to U.S. troops and vital interests. They highlighted repeated assurances against regime change or military action, labeling it a deception.

Calls for Accountability
Democrats urged immediate congressional briefings and accused Trump of distracting from domestic issues like rising costs and Epstein files. Schumer indicated the Senate would vote on blocking further action, framing it as an “illegal war” endangering troops without strategy. The criticism echoes broader concerns over unconstitutional overreach and potential for prolonged U.S. involvement.
