Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump held a one-hour phone call on Tuesday, discussing the outcome of recent visits by US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Moscow and Kyiv.
The Kremlin described the conversation as “constructive and extremely frank,” while Putin assured Trump that Russia has “no aggressive plans” towards Europe.
A High-Stakes Call

The Kremlin described the conversation as “constructive and extremely frank” .
Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov told reporters that the call lasted “exactly one hour” and was conducted in a “businesslike and mutually respectful atmosphere”.
The Context: US Envoys in Moscow and Kyiv
Over the weekend of September 5-6, 2026, US envoys Steve Witkoff, Trump’s commercial ally, and Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, visited Moscow and Kyiv for separate meetings with Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Kushner and Witkoff were expected to present a US peace proposal to end the Ukraine war.
Zelenskyy described the envoys’ ideas as “very good, worthwhile ideas” for ending the war.
What Was Discussed
According to Ushakov, Putin and Trump exchanged views on the outcome of the envoys’ visits and the broader efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict.
Putin presented Trump with an “objective and detailed analysis” of the situation on the frontline. He also reportedly outlined what the United States could realistically do to bring the hostilities to a rapid conclusion.
No Immediate Breakthrough
Despite the diplomatic momentum, the talks did not produce immediate breakthroughs.
Moscow has not shown signs of abandoning its maximalist conditions for ending the war, including demands that Ukraine cede territory in the east that Russian troops have not captured.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia remained determined to accomplish its military goals and believed “victory is very close” on the battlefield.
Russia Has ‘No Aggressive Plans’ Towards Europe
Putin assured Trump that Russia “has no aggressive plans” regarding Europe, according to Ushakov. Ushakov added:
“In view of the speculation about Russia’s alleged hostile intentions toward European countries, it was underlined that we don’t have any aggressive plans regarding Europe”.
However, Moscow was accused over the summer of intensifying a sabotage campaign against European supporters of Ukraine, allegations it has denied.
Ushakov said such “myths” about the Russian threat serve as a pretext for Europeans to increase support for Ukraine and their own military spending.
The Broader Diplomatic Context
The phone call came after CIA Director John Ratcliffe made a surprise visit to Moscow in late August.
It also comes as European countries continue to increase military spending and support for Ukraine, with the European Commission approving a €3.2 billion ($3.7 billion) loan for Kyiv to purchase components for Patriot air defence systems.
Zelenskyy indicated that he hopes to meet Trump around September 20 when the UN General Assembly is due to be held in New York.
He also indicated that negotiations between Ukraine, Russia and the US could resume in the autumn.
