Troost-Ekong Targets NFF Boardroom Role

​Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has set his sights on a future in football administration, signaling a strategic shift away from the touchline in favor of the boardroom.

​The 32-year-old, who retired from international duty in 2025 after a storied 83-cap career, revealed that he is currently pursuing educational qualifications through the English Football Association to prepare for a role in governance. “I have had so many people ask me about coaching, but I am not sure that is something I really want to do,” Troost-Ekong told Brila FM. “There need to be players that think about going one level above—whether it is the boardroom, working with federations, FIFA, or CAF. That is where you can make the biggest change.”

​Troost-Ekong’s ambition arrives amid a broader, intensifying debate regarding the leadership of Nigerian football. Following the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, critics have called for a complete structural overhaul.

​His stance aligns with a growing chorus of former internationals, including Godwin Okpara, Austin Popo, and Anambra FA Chairman Chikelue Ileonyosi, who have collectively challenged retired footballers to stop “complaining from the sidelines” and instead actively seek leadership positions within the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

​”We have so many ex-players who have a great understanding of the game,” Troost-Ekong noted, acknowledging that the political landscape in African football can be complex. “We have not seen enough ex-players getting involved from the top. For me, it is about finding ways that we can collaborate and enhance the federation because we have been there; we have seen it.”

​To support his transition, the former Watford and PAOK defender cited the successful administrative paths taken by global icons like Andriy Shevchenko and Samuel Eto’o, both of whom have ascended to the presidencies of their respective national associations. Brazilian legend Zico, who previously served as his nation’s Minister of Sports, also serves as a benchmark for Troost-Ekong’s vision of football governance.

​While figures like former captain John Obi Mikel have recently voiced strong criticisms of the current football system, the conversation has increasingly turned toward practical, systemic reform.
