Tragedy Strikes: Liverpool’s Diogo Jota and Brother Die in Fatal Car Crash

Zamora, Spain – The football world is in mourning following the tragic death of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, 28, and his brother, Andre Felipe, 26, in a devastating car accident early Thursday 3rd of July morning in Zamora, Spain. The Spanish Civil Guard has confirmed the fatalities.

The incident occurred around 12:30 AM on Wednesday on the A52 highway in the municipality of Cernadilla. Initial investigations suggest that the Lamborghini carrying the two Portuguese footballers may have suffered a tire burst while attempting to overtake another vehicle, causing it to veer off the road. The car subsequently burst into flames, proving fatal for both occupants.

Emergency services, including the Zamora Provincial Council Fire Department and medical units, responded to the scene but were tragically unable to save them.
The news comes just days after Jota married his long-time partner, Rute Cardoso, on June 22. Jota, who joined Liverpool in 2020 from Wolverhampton Wanderers for €44.7 million, was a pivotal player for the Reds, contributing to their Premier League, FA Cup, and Carabao Cup triumphs. He also represented Portugal on the international stage, winning the Nations League twice. His brother, Andre Felipe, was also a professional footballer, playing for Penafiel FC in Portugal.

Tributes have poured in from across the globe, with Portugal’s Prime Minister Luís Montenegro expressing profound sadness: “The news of the death of Diogo Jota, an athlete who greatly honored Portugal’s name, and his brother, is unexpected and tragic. I extend my deepest condolences to their family. It is a sad day for football and for national and international sports.”

The Portuguese Football Federation also released a statement, devastated by the loss of both players. Jota is survived by his wife, Rute Cardoso, and their three children.
