Togo Announces Visa-Free Entry for All African Citizens

Togo has announced the removal of visa requirements for citizens of all African countries visiting the nation for short stays of up to 30 days. The policy was announced on Tuesday, May 19, in a statement issued by Togo’s Ministry of Security through its official X account.

According to the ministry, the decision forms part of efforts aimed at promoting African integration, mobility and cooperation across the continent. Under the new arrangement, African nationals holding valid national passports will be allowed to enter Togo without obtaining a visa for visits lasting up to 30 days.

“Togo takes a historic step in strengthening African integration. Henceforth, all nationals of African states holding a valid national passport may enter Togolese territory without a visa, for a stay of up to 30 days,” the statement said.

The ministry added that the reform reflects the government’s broader commitment to positioning Togo as a hub for openness and continental collaboration. “Through this major reform, the President of the Council reaffirms his commitment to making Togo a space of openness, mobility, opportunities, and cooperation at the heart of the African continent,” the statement added.

Despite the visa exemption, travellers will still be required to complete a travel declaration through the government’s official online platform at least 24 hours before arrival in order to obtain a travel slip. Authorities said the policy demonstrates Togo’s commitment to strengthening regional integration and improving ties among African nations.

The move follows a similar visa-free initiative introduced by Rwanda. In response to Rwanda’s policy, Nigeria also recently began implementing a 30-day visa exemption for Rwandan citizens entering the country.
