Tinubu sets 14-month target to complete Abuja-Kano expressway

President Bola Tinubu has set a 14-month deadline for the completion of the Abuja-Kano Expressway, demonstrating his commitment to the swift delivery of this critical infrastructure project.

The visit was followed by a statement issued by his media aide, Rabiu Ibrahim, on Friday.

Idris, accompanied by the Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, and key members of the National Assembly, highlighted that the President’s insistence on timely delivery resulted in the revocation of certain sections of the contract previously handled by Julius Berger PLC. The reassigned segments are now being executed by a new contractor to expedite progress.

“Mr President is determined to see the completion of this project within the revised timeline. We will not allow any contractor to hold us to ransom. The target of 14 months is achievable, and we believe it will be completed on time,” Idris stated, urging stakeholders to prioritise the project’s completion as a matter of national importance.
He also noted the President’s rejection of a proposed three-year timeline by Julius Berger, which included a cost escalation from N797 billion to N1.5 trillion.

“The President has insisted that this work must be completed. We cannot afford to wait another three years for this road. The Honourable Minister of Works has set a 14-month target for completion, and with the enthusiasm and determination of everyone involved, we believe this goal is achievable.

“For those politicising this project, please put politics aside. This road is essential for linking the Federal Capital Territory to Kano and other states. President Tinubu is resolute that this project will be completed, and nothing will stop it,” he added.

The project has been segmented into three sections to enhance efficiency. Minister Umahi noted the inclusion of additional features such as a 10.6-kilometre extension to the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, a 5-kilometre addition towards Kogi State, and solar lighting along the entire stretch to prepare the road for an operation and maintenance concession.

“I am happy to announce that we received a ‘No Objection’ from the Bureau of Public Procurement for a total contract sum of N252.89 billion. I am confident that the Federal Executive Council will approve this in its next sitting.

“We have added a 10.6-kilometre extension to the Kano axis to connect the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, another 5 kilometres towards Kogi, and full solar light installations to ensure the road is prepared for operation and maintenance concessions,” Umahi disclosed.
