President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a two-year extension of the tenure for the Surveyor-General of the Federation, Mr. AbuduGaniyu Adeyemi Adebomehin, allowing him to continue in office until January 2028. This decision, announced by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, takes effect from January 5, 2026, marking a continuation of critical reforms underway in the nation’s geospatial data and land management infrastructure.
The move follows a recent landmark administrative transfer of the Office of the Surveyor-General of the Federation (OSGOF) from the Ministry of Works and Housing directly to the Presidency. This shift places the agency’s geospatial intelligence and national surveying operations under the direct oversight of the executive arm, enhancing coordination and elevating the strategic importance of the office.
President Tinubu’s directive entrusts Mr. Adebomehin with the responsibility of consolidating and completing ongoing reforms that focus on national land administration, infrastructure coordination related to highways and abutting lands, as well as reclamation and erosion control initiatives. These reforms are expected to strengthen Nigeria’s land management systems and improve infrastructure planning and security operations nationwide.
Mr. Adebomehin was initially appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari, effective January 5, 2022, for a four-year term subject to renewal based on satisfactory performance. A seasoned professional with over 30 years of experience in surveying and geoinformatics, Adebomehin has brought steady leadership to the office, having risen through various roles including Director of Internal Boundary.
The extension is widely seen as a strategic effort by the Presidency to ensure continuity and momentum in upgrading Nigeria’s geospatial data infrastructure, a vital resource for governance, development planning, and national security.
With Mr. Adebomehin now having until 2028 to implement these priorities, the Presidency anticipates significant progress in harmonizing land management practices, enhancing erosion control programmes, and coordinating national infrastructure development to meet strategic national interests. This tenure extension reflects the President’s confidence in Mr. Adebomehin’s capability to drive transformative reforms in this critical sector.
