Nigeria is celebrating one of its most recognisable musical figures as Chief Sunday Adeniyi Adegeye, popularly known as King Sunny Ade, turns 80.
President Bola Tinubu joined the tributes on Tuesday, describing the veteran musician as an important figure in Nigeria’s musical and cultural history.
But King Sunny Ade’s 80th birthday is bigger than a presidential congratulatory message. It marks more than six decades of a career that helped move Nigerian juju music from local audiences into the international cultural marketplace.
Born in Ondo State, Ade emerged as one of the leading figures in Nigerian popular music before building an international reputation through recordings and performances that introduced wider audiences to juju’s distinctive rhythms, guitar arrangements and talking-drum traditions.
