President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has authorized a significant reshuffle in the leadership echelon of Nigeria’s Armed Forces, marking a critical step in fortifying the national security framework. The announcement, made on Friday through a statement by Sunday Dare, the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication, reveals newly appointed Service Chiefs tasked with revitalizing the military’s strategic command.
At the helm of the military leadership transition is General Olufemi Oluyede, appointed as the new Chief of Defence Staff, succeeding General Christopher Musa. The shift in command comes amid broader efforts by the Federal Government to reinforce the nation’s defense capabilities amid evolving security challenges.
In conjunction with General Oluyede’s appointment, Major-General W. Shaibu takes over as Chief of Army Staff. Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke has been named Chief of Air Staff, bringing his extensive military experience to the Nigerian Air Force’s leadership. Rear Admiral I. Abbas steps in as Chief of Naval Staff, guiding naval operations with fresh perspectives.
Notably, Major-General E.A.P. Undiendeye retains his crucial position as Chief of Defence Intelligence, ensuring continuity in intelligence operations essential for national security.
President Tinubu expressed profound gratitude to the outgoing military leaders for their patriotic service and committed leadership that contributed to the country’s stability and territorial integrity. He urged the newly appointed Service Chiefs to live up to the confidence vested in them by enhancing professionalism, vigilance, and camaraderie within the Nigerian Armed Forces.
All the appointments were effective immediately, signaling an urgent resolve by the government to boost military readiness and cohesiveness as security demands intensify across the country.
This leadership overhaul follows closely on the heels of heightened security concerns and the recent arrest of senior military personnel suspected of plotting to destabilize the government, underscoring the administration’s determination to maintain discipline and order within the armed forces.
President Tinubu’s decisive action is a testament to his commitment as Commander-in-Chief to equip Nigeria’s military leadership with the right blend of experience and renewed vigor as the nation confronts ongoing security challenges.
These appointments mark a new chapter in Nigeria’s defense leadership, with expectations for heightened operational effectiveness and strengthened national defense strategies under the restructured military command .
