President Bola Tinubu has announced plans for an immediate review of the pension and severance packages for retired police officers to better reflect their significant contributions and commitment to Nigeria.
Additionally, Tinubu proposed the initiation of an Executive Order to designate a day between March 5 and April 1 as National Police and Veterans’ Day.
Tinubu made these declarations during the official launch of the Police Veterans’ Foundation at the Police Service Commission headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday.
Represented by the Minister of State for Police Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, the President assured his unwavering support for the foundation, emphasizing the moral obligation of both government and society to assist retired police officers.
He stated, “Supporting and assisting police veterans is not just a moral imperative but also obligatory for governments at all levels and well-meaning members of society.”

Tinubu highlighted the pivotal role of these veterans in maintaining peace and security in Nigeria, underscoring the need to acknowledge their sacrifices and heroism.
Furthermore, Tinubu pledged his commitment to enhancing the welfare of retired police officers, including reviewing their pension and severance packages.
He also announced plans to initiate administrative processes for the issuance of an Executive Order to designate a National Police and Veterans’ Day.
In his address, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission and former Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, emphasized the importance of the foundation in addressing the post-service challenges faced by retired officers, such as health and financial difficulties.
He called on Nigerians to support the foundation, highlighting its role in encouraging dedication and commitment among serving officers.
Arase urged everyone to contribute to the foundation’s noble cause, stating that it would not only provide comfort and dignity to retired veterans but also inspire serving officers to greater dedication and commitment, knowing that their sacrifices will be appreciated and honored in retirement.
