Ibadan, Oyo State – A swift response from the Oyo State Government’s fire service on Sunday averted what could have been a devastating fire outbreak at the bustling Bola Ige International Business Complex, also known as Gbagi Market, in Ibadan.
Security personnel on duty noticed smoke emanating from Shop 332 within the complex. Upon immediate investigation, the source was traced to an electrical spark originating from a solar energy system that had been improperly installed.
The security officers promptly alerted the Ministry of Trade, Industry, Investment, and Cooperatives, which in turn contacted the Oyo State Fire Service for urgent intervention. Demonstrating remarkable efficiency, the fire service dispatched two fire trucks to the scene without delay. Their rapid action successfully contained the fire, preventing it from spreading to adjacent shops and significantly minimizing potential damage and losses.
Honourable Adeniyi Adebisi, the Commissioner for Trade, Industry, Investment, and Cooperatives, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Mamud Okesade, visited the incident site to assess the situation. He confirmed the cause of the fire and lauded the fire service personnel for their timely and effective response. Mr. Okesade emphasized that their prompt action was instrumental in averting a major disaster and safeguarding the lives and properties of traders and customers at the market.
Mr.Okesade also conveyed the state government’s appreciation to Governor Seyi Makinde for his unwavering commitment to emergency response and public safety. He highlighted that the governor’s proactive leadership has significantly enhanced the state’s emergency preparedness through the implementation of improved fire safety measures, regular inspections, and continuous training for emergency response teams.
Looking ahead, the Commissioner announced that the Ministry will convene a stakeholders’ meeting soon to thoroughly review the incident and develop comprehensive strategies aimed at preventing future occurrences. He urged all business owners within the complex to prioritize strict adherence to safety regulations and adopt proper fire prevention practices to protect their investments and the wider community.
