TikToker Sentenced to One Year Over False Claims Against President

​ACCRA — The Accra Circuit Court has sentenced social media influencer Camilla Alhassan to 12 months in prison following her guilty plea to charges of offensive conduct and the publication of false news directed at President John Dramani Mahama.

​The sentencing, delivered on Thursday, July 16, 2026, marks the conclusion of a case that ignited widespread debate regarding the boundaries of free speech and the responsible use of digital platforms in Ghana.

​Background of the Charges

​Alhassan, 43, was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on July 10, 2026, following a series of videos she posted on TikTok between June 30 and July 5. In these recordings, she leveled several unsubstantiated and inflammatory allegations against President Mahama.

​Among her claims, Alhassan falsely asserted that the President had sacrificed 32 cows as part of ritual practices to secure a victory in the 2024 general election. Furthermore, court documents revealed that her social media content included even more serious, unverified allegations, such as claims linking the President to sexual offenses and the deaths of former Presidents John Evans Atta Mills and Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur.

​During her court appearance, Alhassan pleaded guilty to all charges brought against her under Sections 207 and 208 of Ghana’s Criminal Offences Act, 1960. Her defense counsel, Kwadwo Gyamfi Bonsu, had initially sought a more lenient sentence for the content creator.
