Chinese-owned video-sharing platform TikTok has announced the voluntary suspension of its rewards scheme for the new TikTok Lite app, following a legal investigation by the European Commission.
The European Commission had previously indicated on Monday that it might instruct TikTok to suspend the rewards feature unless the company could demonstrate within 48 hours that it does not pose a risk of serious harm.
The commission also required TikTok to show compliance with risk assessment and mitigation rules for large platforms under the European Union’s Digital Services Act (DSA).
In a statement posted on X, TikTok stated, “TikTok always seeks to engage constructively with the EU Commission and other regulators. We are therefore voluntarily suspending the rewards functions in TikTok Lite while we address the concerns that they have raised.”

The investigation focuses on the rewards scheme in TikTok Lite, where users can earn points by watching videos and redeem them for items like Amazon vouchers.
The commission expressed concerns about the potential addictive effect of the scheme and stated that it was launched without a thorough risk assessment.
TikTok Lite, a version of the popular TikTok app designed to consume less memory and bandwidth, was launched in Europe this month with releases in Spain and France.
