Three explosives hidden in sack recovered in Borno

The Borno State Police Command has recovered three projectiles explosives concealed inside a sack and dumped in the Dala Kafanti Area of Maiduguri, the state capital.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Nahum Daso, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday.

According to Daso, a resident of the community had alerted the police operatives in the area about the presence of a suspicious sack within the premises of his house.

The PPRO noted that upon receipt of the information, police operatives visited the area and recovered the explosives which were concealed in a sack.

He said, “On January 2, 2025, at about 0925HRS, following a report received from one Asabe James of Dala Kafanti Area Maiduguri, Borno State, reported to the command that she sighted a suspicious sack containing unidentified items behind her house.

“On receipt of the information, the command’s EOD-CBRN Base 13 Maiduguri, swiftly moved to the scene, cordoned and swept the area, where three projectiles were recovered in the sack.

“Preliminary investigations further reveal that the ordnance was dropped by unknown persons in the first flush of the morning on the same day.”

He added that upon retrieving the explosives, members of the community were sensitised to safety tips which he stressed to include “keep your composure to think clearly and react appropriately; take note of your location; the explosive’s location and potential escape routes; keep a safe distance from the explosive to minimise the risk of injury and call the police or local authorities and provide them with as much information as possible.”

The Borno State Commissioner of Police, Yusufu Mohammed Lawal, further reassured the command’s commitment to ensuring public safety and security.

It was reported on Tuesday that the Borno command announced the recovery of 18 unexploded explosive devices and the arrest of 721 suspects for various crimes across the state in 2024.

The CP had, during the command’s end-of-year press briefing, highlighted achievements in crime prevention and law enforcement over the year, attributing the successes to policing measures implemented by officers of the command.
