Sixteen years after one of the most explosive chapters in international football history, the shadow of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa still looms large over French football. Former Arsenal and Chelsea striker Nicolas Anelka has shed new light on the halftime dressing-room confrontation with manager Raymond Domenech that ultimately tore the French squad apart and triggered a national scandal.

During the group-stage clash against Mexico, with France struggling to break a 0-0 deadlock, tensions reached a breaking point. Anelka, isolated and frustrated by a lack of service, found himself directly singled out by Domenech in the locker room.
“I was thinking to myself, ‘I’m not getting the ball, I’m not finding a solution,’” Anelka recalled. “When he called out my name with all that pent-up frustration, it just came out… I didn’t like that he called me out by name as if I were guilty, as if it were all my fault. I took it as an attack.”
The resulting verbal exchange, famously reported by the French sports daily L’Équipe as a profanity-laced tirade, saw Anelka purportedly tell the manager to “go f*** yourself, you son of a whore.” While Anelka has vehemently denied the specific wording of the insult, the damage was irreversible. Domenech substituted him at halftime, and by the next day, the French Football Federation (FFF) had ordered the striker to be sent home.

The decision to expel Anelka proved to be the catalyst for a total collapse of authority within Les Bleus. In an act of solidarity that stunned the sporting world, the remaining squad members famously refused to step off the team bus for a scheduled public training session in Knysna. The consequences were swift and severe. Anelka received an 18-match international ban, effectively ending his 69-cap career with the national team. Further disciplinary measures were taken against other squad leaders: Patrice Evra was handed a five-match suspension, Franck Ribéry received three, and Jérémy Toulalan was banned for one game.
The episode forced a painful “Year Zero” for French football, leading to a complete structural overhaul under new coach Laurent Blanc.
