A devastating explosion and fire at Sigachi Industries’ pharmaceutical factory in Pashamylaram, Sangareddy district, Telangana, has claimed the lives of 40 workers and injured over 33 others, officials confirmed on July 2, 2025. The blast occurred on June 30 in the factory’s spray dryer unit, which processes raw materials into fine powder for drug production. At the time, 143 employees were present, with many trapped as the entire three-storey building collapsed.

Rescue teams continue to clear debris amid challenging conditions, with severely burned bodies undergoing DNA testing for identification. Two injured workers later died in hospital, raising the death toll from earlier reports of 36-39 fatalities.
Sigachi Industries has denied that a reactor explosion caused the blast, attributing preliminary suspicions to a possible pressure buildup in the drying system, potentially a dust explosion. The company has suspended plant operations for 90 days and announced compensation of Rs 1 crore (approx. $120,000) to families of the deceased, along with full medical care and rehabilitation for the injured.
The Telangana state government has registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the factory management under culpable homicide and grievous hurt charges and launched an official inquiry to determine the cause and prevent future incidents. Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy called it the worst industrial accident in Telangana’s history and pledged strict enforcement of safety measures.
This tragedy adds to recent national calamities, including the June 12 Air India Boeing 787 crash near Ahmedabad, which killed over 270 people. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences and promised support and accountability for both disasters.
