Alabi, who is under 18, alleges he was abducted by local “Area Boys” after they became resentful that he did not share money received following his appearance before the convoy of Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi during the 2023 election campaign. His mother corroborated his account, citing repeated threats prior to his abduction.
The teenager was subsequently handed over to the Amukoko Police Station (Pako Police Station) and charged alongside four unknown individuals with conspiracy to commit armed robbery. The alleged victims claim N579,000 in cash and four mobile phones were stolen.
During interviews at the Kirikiri Custodial Centre, it became clear to the visiting delegation that Alabi’s case raises serious concerns. He is being held alongside adult inmates, despite his status as a minor, while awaiting legal advice from the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). He has appeared before the Magistrate three times without significant progress.
“It is evident that this young man is a victim of systemic flaws in Nigeria’s criminal justice system,” a legal representative stated. The delegation expressed commitment to pursuing all legal avenues to secure Alabi’s release.
This case has sparked outrage among activists and family members, who are calling for urgent reforms to address the alleged injustices within the system. The incident underscores concerns regarding the handling of minors within the judicial process and the potential for abuse. Updates on Alabi’s case will be provided as they become available.
