Students Flee Delta Polytechnic Amidst Rising Fear After Gunmen Gunmen kill One, Rape Three

The Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku, is currently experiencing heightened tension following a recent attack by gunmen on the student hostels, resulting in one fatality and several injuries.

Reportedly, the school management responded to the incident by declaring a one-week shutdown of academic activities to implement enhanced security measures and prevent further occurrences.

According to a female Higher National Diploma student who spoke anonymously, the persistent invasion of armed men into the hostels has instilled fear among students, prompting many to vacate the premises.

She recounted a previous attack where a male student was shot in the leg and two female students were raped.

Another student, preferring anonymity, disclosed that a student was allegedly killed during the Friday shooting, with others sustaining injuries from gunshot wounds and machete cuts.

The attackers also reportedly extorted money from students and looted their belongings, including phones and laptops.

The Rector of the institution, Prof. Emmanuel Achuenu, announced the temporary closure of the school on Friday to ensure the safety of students.

The closure was intended to last until Monday, February 26, with assurances from the Students Union Government (SUG) that measures would be taken to address the security challenges.

State Commissioner of Police, Abaniwonda Olufemi, has taken action by summoning relevant police officials to address the situation.

Security has been reinforced in the polytechnic town, and the police are actively involved in managing the crisis.

Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants gained entry to the hostels by scaling the fence and coercing security guards into compliance before commencing their attack.

The incidents have raised concerns about the safety of students and underscore the urgent need for effective security measures to prevent further violence and safeguard the academic environment.
