A mild drama unfolded in Abuja on Monday as Senator Osita Izunaso of Imo West urged the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, to stop airport officials from soliciting money from passengers. The senator specifically called on the Nigeria Customs Service, Nigeria Immigration Service, and other uniformed airport personnel to desist from the unprofessional conduct of begging travellers for money, warning that such behavior harms Nigeria’s image internationally.
Senator Izunaso lamented that despite significant improvements at Nigeria’s airports, some officials continue to greet travellers with calls like “Your boys are here, Sir!” and insist on excessive greetings that suggest a demand for tips. He described this as embarrassing and damaging to the country’s reputation, especially before foreign visitors.
He stated, “When some officers say ‘Oga, you are welcome’ multiple times, it does not depict professionalism but subtle requests for more than their duties.” He stressed that such behavior needs correction ahead of Nigeria’s hosting of the 2026 World Public Relations Forum, which will attract participants from 126 countries.
Contrasting the senator’s concerns, Dr. Ike Neliaku, President of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, attested to notable progress and said such greetings were no longer common. The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, praised the aviation sector’s transformation, commending Keyamo’s leadership in improving entry and exit points at airports.
Customs Comptroller-General Bashir Adeniyi also highlighted recent technological advancements such as digital passport scanning that have enhanced efficiency and reduced the need for excessive human intervention.
Minister Keyamo assured that Nigeria’s airports are being prepared to give visitors a warm and professional welcome in 2026, including the establishment of special VVIP departments for important guests.
The incident underscores ongoing challenges in Nigerian airport services despite reforms and the government’s commitment to improving travellers’ experiences and national image ahead of major international events .
