Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has warned traditional rulers across the state to remain politically neutral, stressing that monarchs who openly support political parties or candidates risk exposing themselves to avoidable political attacks. He warned that anyone found engaged in politics would be treated as a politician.
A Warning to the Palace
ValidViewNetwork gathered that Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has warned traditional rulers across the state to remain politically neutral, stressing that monarchs who openly support political parties or candidates risk exposing themselves to avoidable political attacks.
Makinde gave the charge on Saturday at the grand finale of the week-long first coronation anniversary of Oba Samuel Adebayo Adegbola Ajobo Olurin I, the Eleruwa of Eruwa.
Stay Neutral, Stay Safe
The governor emphasised that traditional rulers must remain accessible to all political actors seeking royal blessings rather than openly endorsing any candidate.
He warned that anyone found engaged in politics would be treated as a politician.
“Traditional rulers must remain neutral. If you are a monarch and you want to be partisan, you will be treated as a politician,” Makinde said.
His Presidential Ambition
Makinde, who also spoke on his presidential ambition, disclosed plans to intensify nationwide consultations for his bid.
He said the political neutrality of traditional rulers was important because politicians from different parties would continue to seek their support and blessings.
Infrastructure Updates
The governor also provided updates on infrastructure projects, assuring that the Ido–Eruwa Road would be commissioned in December.
He disclosed that the payment of N14.5 billion counterpart funding to the African Development Bank would resolve financial constraints affecting the Eruwa Farm Settlement.
A Lesson for Nigerian Youths
This warning is a reminder that traditional institutions must remain above politics.
The same politicians who seek royal blessings will never allow their own children to be used as political pawns.
Their families are protected.
For young Nigerians, the lesson is clear: power comes with responsibility.
The same leaders who demand neutrality from traditional rulers will never allow their own children to be caught in political crossfire.
Respect traditional institutions. Demand political neutrality.
