The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, has issued the Federal Government a fresh 14-day ultimatum to release funds for the implementation of its 2026 agreement and pay outstanding arrears, warning that failure could trigger an indefinite strike.
The union’s latest warning raises the possibility of another disruption in Nigeria’s university system at a time when the government is attempting to stabilise industrial relations with university-based unions.
SSANU DEMANDS FULL IMPLEMENTATION
SSANU said outstanding payments under the agreement reached with the Federal Government remain unresolved.
The union has demanded the release of funds required to complete implementation and settle arrears owed to its members.
According to the union, the agreement was formally signed on June 29, 2026, but implementation has not been completed.
The association said the arrears date back to January 1, 2026. It warned that failure to meet its demands within the 14-day period would leave the union with no option but to commence an indefinite strike.
GOVERNMENT HAS A SHORT WINDOW
The latest ultimatum gives the Federal Government a relatively short period to resolve the dispute before it potentially develops into another prolonged university-sector crisis.
Education Minister Tunji Alausa has reportedly moved to engage the union in an effort to prevent industrial action. The union, however, maintains that the issue is not simply about negotiations but about implementing commitments already contained in the agreement.
SSANU has also indicated that the ultimatum could be avoided if the government fulfils its latest commitment to release the outstanding funds.
KING’S COLLEGE CONCESSION ALSO OPPOSED
The dispute comes alongside another disagreement between SSANU and the Federal Government over plans involving King’s College, Lagos. The union has rejected the proposed concession of the institution, adding another point of tension between the parties.
The development means the government is facing pressure on more than one front in its relationship with university-based workers.
WHAT IS AT STAKEAn indefinite strike by SSANU could affect administrative and non-teaching services in federal universities. While academic unions and non-academic unions have different mandates, prolonged industrial disputes involving university staff can disrupt admissions, examinations, registration, administration and other essential university operations.
The dispute therefore extends beyond salary arrears to the wider question of whether agreements reached between government and university unions are implemented within agreed timelines.
NEXT STEPS
The immediate issue is whether the Federal Government will release the funds and complete the outstanding payments before SSANU’s deadline expires.
If the government meets the union’s demands, the threatened strike could be avoided. If not, SSANU’s warning points to a possible escalation that could once again place the stability of Nigeria’s public university system under pressure, ValidViewNetwork reports.
