The remains of the late Arise News TV anchor, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, fondly called ‘Sommie,’ were laid to rest amid tears and heartfelt tributes on Saturday, October 18, 2025, in Agulu, Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State. This burial came after a solemn funeral Mass held at St Theresa Catholic Church, attended by family, friends, colleagues, dignitaries including the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and community members.

Sommie tragically lost her life in September 2025 during a brutal armed robbery attack at her residence in Katampe, Abuja. The assailants invaded her home at night, leading to fatal injuries that claimed the life of the talented journalist and a security guard. Her death reverberated through Nigeria’s media community, marking a heartbreaking loss of a promising and dynamic young journalist. The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has made strides in the investigation, arresting 12 suspects believed to be linked to the crime, with their firearms traced to Niger Republic.

In his homily, Reverend Father Peter Ezewuzie comforted mourners by highlighting the quality of the life Sommie lived despite its brevity, emphasizing faith in God’s plan. Peter Obi, who also mourned her loss, called her death a painful reminder of the security challenges facing the nation and urged that she and her family be remembered in prayers.

Sommie was celebrated as an intelligent, hardworking, and vibrant individual whose passion for journalism left an indelible mark. The burial event unified journalists, government officials, and local community members as they paid their respects to a bright star whose life was cruelly cut short but whose legacy continues to inspire
