LAGOS — Celebrated Nigerian Afro-house vocalist and Grammy-nominated singer, Niniola Apata, has announced the sudden and tragic passing of her husband, Michael Ndika.
The musician shared the devastating news in a series of poignant, raw posts on her verified Instagram Stories in the early hours of Wednesday, May 20, breaking her characteristic silence regarding her private life.
’13 F***ing Years’: A Heartbreaking Announcement
Niniola, who has historically kept her romantic relationship and family life strictly guarded from social media and tabloid scrutiny, expressed deep anguish over the loss of her longtime partner.
In a succession of emotional updates accompanied by cherished photographs of the couple together, the 39-year-old singer wrote:
“God took him.”
“My husband died.”
“God took him. 13 years. 13 f***ing years.”
The brief but agonizing messages indicate a deep bond spanning over a decade, catching both the entertainment industry and her millions of global fans completely unawares. As of the time of publication, the exact circumstances, location, and cause of Mr. Ndika’s death have not been disclosed by the Apata or Ndika families.
A Quiet Titan in African Media
While Niniola commanded the international stage, her late husband, Michael Ndika, was a highly respected professional behind the scenes in the contemporary African music ecosystem.
As the Chief Executive Officer of NaijaReview, a prominent multimedia and digital curation platform, Ndika was instrumental in documenting, reviewing, and amplifying Afro-house, Afrobeats, and sub-Saharan soundscapes to a global audience. His platform served as a crucial bridge for independent African artists seeking visibility.
Industry in Mourning
Niniola shot to national prominence after emerging as one of the top contestants in the 2013 edition of Project Fame West Africa. She quickly solidified her status as a musical powerhouse with her 2017 monster hit Maradona, which earned her global acclaim. Over her career, her distinct vocal prowess has drawn heavy collaborations and public admiration from international icons including Beyoncé, Drake, DJ Snake, and Timbaland.
