Shock as Chef Discovers ‘Heinze’ Ketchup in Family Fridge After Months of Use

Popular Nigerian chef and food influencer Ify Mogekwu, better known as Ify’s Kitchen, has sparked widespread concern after discovering what she believes is a counterfeit bottle of ketchup that her family had been using for months.

In a video that quickly went viral, the content creator reacted with visible surprise as she examined the bottle more closely. What caught her eye was a subtle but unmistakable spelling error on the label: the iconic brand name appeared as “Heinze” instead of the familiar “Heinz.”

Ify shared her shock online, noting that the product had sat unnoticed in her home for an extended period. She urged followers to inspect their own ketchup bottles and other packaged foods, warning that similar fakes could be lurking in kitchens across the country.

The discovery has reignited long-standing worries about counterfeit and substandard food products flooding Nigerian markets. Consumers and social media users responded with a mix of alarm and dark humour, with some sharing photos of other oddly named variants, including one labelled “Arinze Tomato Ketchup.”

Counterfeit goods remain a persistent challenge in Nigeria. Economic pressures, including currency fluctuations and high import costs, have made premium brands like Heinz more expensive and harder to obtain, creating openings for opportunistic producers of lookalike products. Reports from previous years have documented fake Heinz ketchup circulating in major supermarket chains, with packaging that closely mimics the original but differs in texture, taste, and quality.

Regulatory authorities have been active. The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) recently reported removing more than 7,210 non-compliant products from circulation and securing convictions against dozens of counterfeiters. The agency has also highlighted the role of sophisticated networks, including some linked to foreign operators, that identify popular brands and replicate them for the local market. Despite these efforts, everyday products—from condiments and beverages to dairy and packaged sauces—continue to raise consumer suspicions.

Her alert carries particular weight among food lovers who trust her recommendations.
