​Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the transformative former Emir of Qatar who propelled the Gulf nation from a quiet regional state into a global powerhouse of energy, diplomacy, and media, passed away on Sunday morning at the age of 74.

​The Amiri Diwan, Qatar’s top government body, confirmed the passing in an official statement, praying for mercy upon his soul and honoring his enduring legacy of service to the homeland. Following the announcement, the state has declared four days of national mourning. Flags across Qatar and its diplomatic missions abroad will fly at half-mast, and government offices will observe a period of closure.

​Born on January 1, 1952, Sheikh Hamad assumed the throne in 1995 after a bloodless coup against his father. Over the next 18 years, he orchestrated a radical modernization program that fundamentally reshaped the Qatari state.

​Under his visionary leadership, Qatar leveraged its massive natural gas reserves to become the world’s leading exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG), creating one of the highest per-capita incomes globally. Beyond economic development, he sought to cement Qatar’s influence on the world stage by launching the Al Jazeera news network and spearheading high-profile international investments, including the acquisition of London’s iconic Harrods department store.

​In a move that defied traditional regional norms, Sheikh Hamad voluntarily abdicated in June 2013, transferring power to his son, the current Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. At the time, he stated that it was time for a new generation to lead the country with “innovative ideas and active energies”.

​Funeral and Mourning

​Funeral prayers are scheduled for Sunday evening at the Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab Mosque in Doha, with his burial to follow at the Lusail Cemetery. Current Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani is expected to receive condolences from heads of state, members of the royal family, and dignitaries at Lusail Palace from July 13 to July 15.
