Sevilla won their seventh UEFA Europa League trophy after beating AS Roma in a penalty shootout to win Wednesday’s final in Budapest.
The Spanish club overcame Jose Mourinho led Roma on penalties by 4-1 following a thrilling 1-1 draw at the Puskas Arena.
Paulo Dybala had given Roma the lead in the first half when he raced on to a through pass and slotted into the net.
Sevilla however equalized through a Gianluca Mancini own goal from a Jesus Navas cross in the 55th minutes.
With 15 minutes left Sevilla were awarded a penalty but after VAR check the decision was overturned.
In the last seconds in extra-time Chris Smalling almost won it for Roma but his header came off the bar.
The game was then decided on penalties which saw Sevilla’s Moroccan keeper Yassine Bounou make two saves before Argentina 2022 World Cup winner Gonzalo Montiel converted the final kick.
This is the first time ever José Mourinho will lose in a major European final after winning his previous five (two Champions League, two Europa and one Conference League).
With the truimph, Sevilla have qualified for next season’s Champions League despite their position in the Spanish league.
