In a recent move seemingly aimed at mitigating negative media coverage regarding his past misconduct, Senator Neda Bernards Imasuen, who represents Edo South in Nigeria’s National Assembly, has updated his Wikipedia page to include details of his disbarment as a legal practitioner in New York.
Imasuen was permanently disbarred for life after being found guilty of defrauding his client, Daphne Slyfield, by absconding with her legal fees without ever appearing in court on her behalf. This decision came after he failed to respond to multiple disciplinary petitions and fled to Nigeria to evade consequences from the Grievance Committee responsible for attorney conduct.
Currently serving as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions (SCEPPP), Imasuen’s leadership has come under scrutiny, particularly following his committee’s recent recommendation to suspend Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for alleged violations of Senate rules. His actions raise serious questions about the integrity of Nigeria’s political leadership, especially considering his own history of professional misconduct.
Last week, Imasuen initially dismissed Akpoti-Uduaghan’s sexual harassment petition against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, claiming it did not adhere to due process. However, he later accepted the petition after it was resubmitted correctly.
Imasuen’s disbarment is part of a troubling trend among Nigerian politicians who have committed crimes abroad and returned home to pursue political careers.
