PRETORIA – Detectives in Gauteng have intensified their crackdown on a violent hijacking syndicate following the arrest of a second suspect linked to the cold-blooded murder of a 22-year-old Nigerian e-hailing driver.
The victim, whose identity is being withheld pending further family notifications, was targeted on the night of February 11, 2026. Preliminary investigations suggest the young driver was lured to Pretoria West after accepting what appeared to be a routine ride request. Instead of a fare, he was met with a deadly ambush.
His body was discovered hours later in the Atteridgeville area, abandoned near his hijacked vehicle.
A Breakthrough in the Investigation
The breakthrough began late last week when Gauteng police apprehended a female suspect. She is currently facing charges of carjacking and murder and is scheduled to make her first appearance at the Atteridgeville Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Following her interrogation, police confirmed on Saturday that a second individual has been taken into custody. Colonel Mavela Masondo, a spokesperson for the South African Police Service (SAPS), indicated that the investigation is moving rapidly as they piece together the final moments of the victim’s life.
The Search for the Third Accomplice
Despite these two arrests, the case remains wide open. Authorities believe at least one more suspect remains at large. “We are following strong leads, but we urge the community to assist us in bringing the final perpetrator to justice,” Masondo stated.
The incident has reignited concerns regarding the safety of e-hailing drivers in Gauteng’s hotspots. E-hailing associations have previously called for stricter passenger verification to prevent “trap” requests that lead to fatal outcomes like this one.
Police have appealed to anyone with information regarding the third suspect’s whereabouts to contact the Crime Stop hotline at 08600 10111.
