Saudi Student Fatally Stabbed in Cambridge—21-Year-Old Suspect Charged

A 20-year-old Saudi student, Mohammed Yousef Al-Qasim, tragically lost his life in Cambridge, England, after being fatally stabbed during an unprovoked attack late Friday night. The incident occurred near Mill Park, just a short walk from his residence. Emergency services responded to reports of violence at 11:27p.m. on August 1, but despite their efforts, Al-Qasim was pronounced dead at 12:01a.m. on August 2.

Al-Qasim had traveled to Cambridge for a 10-week English language program at EF International Language Campuses. According to police accounts, he was confronted and stabbed by the assailant while returning home.

Authorities have charged 21-year-old Chas Corrigan, a local resident, with murder and possession of a knife in a public place. He appeared before Peterborough Magistrates’ Court on Monday and has been remanded in custody pending a further hearing at Cambridge Crown Court. A second man, aged 50, was also arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and remains in custody. Police indicated that a third suspect is still being sought as the investigation continues.

No motive for the stabbing has been established, and police continue to treat the incident as an unprovoked attack. Cambridgeshire Police have urged anyone with information to come forward.

The Saudi Embassy in London is actively coordinating with UK authorities to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding the incident. In a statement, the embassy expressed its condolences to Al-Qasim’s family and pledged support as arrangements are made to repatriate his body.

Tributes have poured in from the Cambridge community and Al-Qasim’s family. In their statement, the bereaved family described Mohammed as “a young man brimming with enthusiasm, chivalry, and courage,” and noted that he was “a dutiful son, a loving brother, and the leader of the family in spirit.” Floral tributes have also been laid at the scene, with heartfelt messages in both English and Arabic.

EF International Language Campuses expressed deep sadness and is providing counseling and support to students and staff affected by the tragedy. “The safety and wellbeing of our students is our top priority,” the school stated.

A post-mortem examination to determine the precise cause of death was scheduled for Tuesday, as the investigation continues amid growing concerns about public safety and violence in the UK.
