Southampton, England – Speculation is mounting over a potential change of ownership at Southampton Football Club, as Saudi Arabian billionaire Turki Alalshikh is reportedly keen on acquiring an English football club, with Saints emerging as a primary target. The news, initially revealed by TalkSPORT’s Simon Jordan, has ignited a fervent debate among the club’s loyal fanbase.

Alalshikh, widely recognized as the driving force behind Saudi Arabia’s “Riyadh Season” and chairman of the General Entertainment Authority, boasts an estimated net worth of approximately £2.05 billion ($2.8 billion). According to Jordan, the influential Saudi advisor is actively seeking a club in the south of England, having ruled out northern clubs like Sheffield Wednesday.
“It’s not just talk, they are interested because they have told me,” Jordan stated on TalkSPORT, indicating direct communication with Alalshikh’s representatives. He added that while Alalshikh also fancies Millwall, Southampton remains a strong contender.
The revelation has split opinion among Saints supporters. Many are optimistic about the prospect of significant investment, hoping it could propel the club back to its former glories. “We need someone who will put money into the club, so I would say yes to this,” commented one fan, Glen Olsen, reflecting a desire for financial backing to boost the team’s fortunes.
However, a vocal contingent of fans expresses reservations, citing concerns over the broader implications of foreign ownership. “No thanks – I’d rather the club was poor and comparatively honest,” remarked Geoff Mitchell, echoing the sentiments of others wary of the club becoming a “trophy asset” for wealthy investors. Scepticism also abounds regarding the likelihood of a deal materializing, with some dismissing the rumours as mere speculation.
Alalshikh is no stranger to football club ownership, having previously owned Egyptian club Pyramids FC from 2018 to 2019 and Spanish side UD Almeria from August 2019 until May 2025. During his tenure, Almeria achieved promotion to La Liga in 2022 but was subsequently relegated. Millwall FC, another club mentioned in connection with Alalshikh, has reportedly denied any substance to the takeover rumours.
The current owners of Southampton, Sport Republic, led by Dragan Solak, are not actively looking to sell the club, according to sources, but have acknowledged that the club, like any business, has a price. Saints have endured two relegations in the three seasons under the current ownership. In response, the club has recently undergone a leadership restructuring, with technical director Johannes Spors revamping the recruitment department and Will Still appointed as the new manager on a three-year deal.
