At the inaugural Honourable Adebo Ogundoyin Students’ Legislative Summit held at the University of Ibadan, former Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, emphasized the pressing need for a unifying figure to heal the nation’s divisions.
Represented by former House of Representatives member, Honourable Golu Timothy, Saraki highlighted the detrimental impact of divisive leadership on national unity.
Saraki underscored the pivotal role of political leaders in shaping the nation’s trajectory, asserting that only a statesman of integrity and vision could bridge the existing divides. He remarked, “It will only take a core statesman to unite the country rather than divide it.”
Focusing on the summit’s theme, “Roles of Quality Legislation in Nation Building,” Saraki emphasized the importance of robust laws in governance, economic development, public safety, and social welfare.

The event also featured Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, who urged youths to embrace leadership roles and actively contribute to nation-building. Makinde drew inspiration from former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, emphasizing the potential for young leaders to effect meaningful change. He pledged support for youth leadership, expressing his reluctance to endorse candidates over 52 years old as his successors.
Commending the summit’s focus on student leaders, Makinde encouraged the emergence of young leaders, urging participants to pursue their aspirations fearlessly. He remarked, “You have the students here and in about three years, some of you will be out there to move on… With the kind of energy you still have, you can pull down the kingdom of Satan.”
The summit concluded with a call to action for youth empowerment and active engagement in shaping Nigeria’s future, echoing Saraki and Makinde’s sentiments on the importance of inclusive leadership and meaningful legislative contributions.
