LAGOS — The Lagos State Government has officially inaugurated the “Adopt-A-School PBAT Feeds – Snacks for Thought” initiative, a core component of the federal government’s Renewed Hope National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme. The launch, held at St. Thomas Anglican Nursery and Primary School in the Badagry Division, signals a concerted effort to eliminate classroom hunger and bridge the gap in educational performance among public primary school pupils.

Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, who was represented at the event by the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Hon. Tolani Sule, emphasized that the state remains committed to ensuring that no child is denied quality education due to the lack of adequate nutrition. He described the programme as a critical investment in the state’s future, noting that consistent nourishment is a prerequisite for academic success.

Leveraging Technology for Accountability

In a move to ensure the longevity and transparency of the project, Governor Sanwo-Olu unveiled the “Adopt-A-School Snacks for Thought Dashboard.” This digital platform is designed to streamline private-sector participation. It allows corporate entities, philanthropic organizations, alumni associations, and individuals to “adopt” specific schools, enabling them to track the direct impact of their contributions. By providing real-time data, the dashboard seeks to maintain public trust and encourage sustainable funding from the private sector.

Broad Economic and Educational Benefits

Beyond the immediate goal of child welfare, the initiative is structured to stimulate the local economy. By sourcing food locally, the programme creates a ready market for area farmers, food vendors, and small-scale business owners, effectively linking educational support to agricultural value chains.

The Executive Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Hon. Babatunde Hunpe, represented by the Council Manager, Mrs. Avoseh-Akwe Senami Oluwakemi, lauded the intervention. He noted that the initiative aligns with local grassroots efforts to improve pupil attendance and reduce dropout rates.

”A hungry child cannot learn effectively,” Mrs. Oluwakemi remarked on behalf of the Chairman. “This is not just about feeding; it is about building a foundation for our children’s future and bolstering our local micro-economy.”

A Collaborative Future

Mrs. Idowu Bukola, representing the National Programme Manager, Princess Aderemi Adebowale, reinforced the federal government’s vision for the program. She highlighted that the initiative is aimed at tackling the systemic issues of classroom hunger while simultaneously boosting school enrollment and retention rates across the nation.

As the “Snacks for Thought” initiative rolls out across the Badagry Division, the state government is calling on well-meaning citizens and organizations to partner with them. The initiative represents a shift toward a more inclusive educational model, where the responsibility of nourishing the next generation is shared between the state, the federal government, and the private sector.

With this launch, Lagos State aims to set a new benchmark for how public-private partnerships can address food insecurity within the classroom, ensuring that every child has the fuel needed to reach their full academic potential.
