Intelligence agencies from Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso are set to publicly disclose the names of senior Nigerian politicians alleged to be supporting bandit groups operating in Nigeria’s North-West region. The revelation forms part of a wider regional effort to dismantle cross-border criminal networks that fuel insecurity across West Africa.
According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, the Sahelian intelligence officials have already compiled a list of high-profile Nigerian political figures suspected of providing financial, logistical, and arms support to gangs terrorizing communities in states such as Zamfara, Katsina, Sokoto, Kebbi, and Kaduna.
Officials also confirmed that several individuals involved in trafficking weapons to these bandits have been arrested, and ongoing investigations are underway to unravel their networks. These arrests highlight the growing enforcement cooperation among Sahel countries in tackling illicit arms smuggling and armed group insurgencies.
The North-West region of Nigeria has experienced escalating violence in recent years due to the activities of tens of thousands of bandits. These armed groups engage in robbery, kidnapping, and attacks on villages, forcing widespread displacement and disrupting regional stability. Intelligence agencies stress that addressing the political sponsorship of these criminals is essential to curbing the crisis.
This planned disclosure by Sahel states reinforces the importance of transnational collaboration in tackling security challenges that transcend borders. By targeting both the bandits and their political backers, regional authorities aim to cut off their sources of funding and arms supplies, thereby weakening the criminal networks that sustain insecurity in West Africa’s frontier zones.
The Nigerian government has been urged to join forces with its Sahel neighbors in deepening investigations into arms procurement and to strengthen joint operations to restore peace in the troubled North-West region.
