Prominent human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has called for the urgent removal of Rivers State Sole Administrator, Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, accusing him of violating constitutional procedures and disregarding President Bola Tinubu’s directives.
Falana, in a statement to Vanguard on Thursday, cited the official Federal Government Gazette, which stipulates that the Sole Administrator’s actions must be guided by regulations issued by the President. However, Falana noted that, “President Bola Tinubu has not issued any Regulation for the operation of the Sole Administrator,” yet Ibas has proceeded to make appointments and remove officials previously appointed by Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Describing the development as unlawful, Falana stated: “By treating the orders of President Bola Tinubu with contempt, the Sole Administrator has compounded the illegality of his appointment. The Sole Administrator ought to be removed without any further delay.”
This call comes amid mounting criticism from legal experts and civil society groups, who have condemned Ibas’s recent dismissal of 23 local government caretakers and the head of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, actions many have labeled as illegal and destabilizing. Critics argue that the appointment and activities of the Sole Administrator lack constitutional backing and threaten democratic governance in Rivers State.
The political crisis in Rivers State continues to spark intense debate over the legitimacy of key appointments and the balance of power between state and federal authorities.
