A high-ranking Russian military officer, identified as Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, chief of Russia’s Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Defense Forces, was killed in a targeted car bombing in eastern Moscow on Sunday evening, December 22, 2025. The explosion, which detonated as Kirillov entered his vehicle near his residence, also claimed the life of his driver, according to Russia’s Investigative Committee.
Eyewitnesses reported a powerful blast around 7:15 PM local time in the Obruchevsky district, shattering windows in nearby buildings and igniting the general’s black Mercedes SUV. Security footage circulating on Russian Telegram channels showed the moment of detonation, with a fireball engulfing the car. No group has claimed responsibility, but Moscow officials swiftly labeled it a “terrorist attack” and launched a murder investigation.

Kirillov, aged 52, had long been a polarizing figure. Dubbed the “Chemicals Czar” by Western media, he led accusations against Ukraine and NATO for alleged chemical weapons use since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. In 2024, Ukraine’s SBU intelligence service publicly branded him a war criminal, placing a $500,000 bounty on his head for his role in biological weapons programs and strikes on civilian areas. Ukrainian sources, speaking anonymously to Reuters, hinted at involvement without confirmation, while Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov condemned the killing as an “act of Ukrainian terrorism.”
This assassination marks the latest in a string of high-profile hits targeting Russian officials. Just last month, a drone strike wounded a top FSB officer in the capital, and earlier this year, military bloggers and propagandists faced mysterious poisonings. Analysts link the surge to Kyiv’s deepening covert operations behind enemy lines, bolstered by Western intelligence. “Moscow’s security apparatus is cracking under pressure,” said Mark Galeotti of the Institute for the Study of War.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has yet to comment publicly, but state media ramped up anti-Ukraine rhetoric overnight. The incident unfolds days before Orthodox Christmas, amplifying its domestic impact amid war fatigue. Investigations continue, with forensics teams combing the blast site for clues on the explosive device—believed to be 200-300 grams of plastic explosives rigged under the chassis.

International reactions poured in swiftly. U.S. State Department urged restraint, while NATO called for transparency. Ukraine denied involvement via its Defense Ministry, stating: “We fight on the battlefield, not through terror.” As Russia vows retaliation, the bombing underscores the war’s spillover into urban assassinations, raising fears of escalation.
